Pen Powered Roots

Editor and writing coach, LaYinka Sanni, initiated Pen Powered as a platform for Muslim women to sharpen and hone their literary prowess.

The name is a spin of LaYinka Sanni’s personal motto of being ‘M-powered’ (Mind-powered), with the hope that Muslim women will realise the beauty and magnitude of the power of their minds through words that flow through their pens.

It’s not limited to a specific genre, and aims to cater for an eclectic group of writers: poets, spoken word artists, fiction crafters, non-fiction writers, and women with a passion for creating a literary ensemble that paints a world of pictures.

Pen Powered Mic aims to raise the literary platform and bring it to the masses. Through a bi-monthly (every 2 months) live online literary event – which is currently on hold – works of poetry, fiction, and prose are delivered from the hearts of writers to an international audience.

The events, which first aired on 31 May 2014, are hosted on a webinar platform accessible via a browser. This allows the audience to enjoy literary awesomeness from the comfort of their home or anywhere that has a good internet connection.

Despite having ‘Muslim roots’, Pen Powered Mic welcomes attendance by women of any faith or none.
